After Atari killed off Vector Tanks I started this from scratch to be as close to a Battlezone sequel as I could get. Open source take on what a Battlezone 2 arcade game would have looked like. You also can't switch between different devices, if you load and edit the joystick preset you're stuck with it, you can't switch to mouselook depending on the vehicle or for infantry without going back to the options and setting it all up again. The supported joystick controls are pretty meh though, from the vehicles I tried so far none let you use a torso/turret/tower twist mode while moving in other directions a la MechWarrior for example, they all control like a standard FPS game. Remember Battlezone 2: Combat Commander Well, it's coming back via a remaster due for release in 2018. People seem to think 98 is the deeper more hardcore game (and I haven't seen anything really negative about the remaster, they never billed it as a remake, it's just spiced up a little and readily available on new OS/platforms etc., of course it would be cool if it looked more modern like 2 does) while this one is a little more casual and streamlined and stuff but I wouldn't know for sure. I never even heard of this game before the remaster's announcement, while Battlezone 98 was pretty well known at the time.

Everything about this feels like they put a lot of polish and dev time into create a true remake instead of doing the least amount possible (like the previous remake of Battlezone 1, which wasn't very good).
It's got some really fantastic lighting now, and the new terrain textures work really well with it. They built up all the interface screens as well, scrapping the old UI entirely. The long-awaited remaster of Battlezone 2 is available now on Steam and GOG to buy and download complete with a special 10 discount during launch week.

All the textures have been redone in HD, and I believe most of the models have a bit of an upgrade as well. They completely rewrote the renderer of the game into a really performant DX11 engine. Now we have Battlezone: Combat Commander, which is a remake. Published by Rebellion and developed by Big Boat. It has since gone on to get a number of sequels but was forgotten in recent years until developers and publishers Rebellion revived it.

I just put two hours into the Battlezone 2 remake that came out on Steam today (called Battlezone: Combat Commander for some reason), and it is really, really good: Battlezone 2 was announced last year to receive a remaster for PC and for those who didn’t like the VR Battlezone, this might be better. Not every PC classic is deserving of a full remaster/remake/spit-and-polish treatment, but I reckon that 1999s RTS/FPS hybrid Battlezone 2: Combat.
